“The Return of the King” is the third and final volume of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings.” It continues the story of the hobbit Frodo Baggins and his companions as they journey through Middle-earth to destroy the One Ring and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the efforts of the remaining members of the Fellowship of the Ring to unite the peoples of Middle-earth against Sauron’s forces. Aragorn, now revealed as the heir to the throne of Gondor, must rally the forces of Gondor and Rohan for the coming war. Meanwhile, Frodo and his loyal friend Sam continue their perilous journey to Mount Doom, where the Ring can be destroyed.
The second part of the book details the epic conclusion of the War of the Ring. The forces of Sauron lay siege to the city of Minas Tirith, leading to a climactic battle in which the armies of Gondor and Rohan, aided by the ghostly Dead Men of Dunharrow, emerge victorious. In the meantime, Frodo and Sam reach Mount Doom, where Gollum, the Ring’s former bearer, reappears and takes the Ring from Frodo. In the struggle that follows, Gollum falls into the fires of the mountain, destroying himself and the Ring.
With the destruction of the Ring, Sauron is defeated, and his forces are scattered. Aragorn is crowned King of Gondor, and the lands of Middle-earth begin to heal from the long years of darkness. The book concludes with the hobbits returning to the Shire, only to find it under the control of the corrupted wizard Saruman. Together with their fellow hobbits, they liberate the Shire and restore peace to their homeland.
“The Return of the King” is a tale of courage, friendship, sacrifice, and the enduring power of hope in the face of overwhelming darkness.
